They Built The Ute

(Daddy Cool)
15-10-2006
Peter Lillie (Mushroom Music)
First track to bounce out from Daddy Cool's album 'The New Cool'. Melbourne writer Peter Lillie penned this song (a/k/a 'The Birth Of The Ute') in the mid 1970s & it was 1st recorded back then by his band 'The Autodrifters'. It has been performed around town by him & a couple of other local acts ever since. DC rearranged it, renamed it, & cut it in our June 2006 sessions spurred on by our upcoming festival gig at the Deniliquin Ute Muster 29 Sept 2006.
THEY BUILT THE UTE

(spoken intro)
This is the story of the Ute
Where it came from and where its been

When man invented the car
He had a machine to take him far
But down in Australia where the wheels weren't cheap
Well it sure wasn't made for shearin' sheep
Then back in 1933 man created the utility
When Henry got a letter from a farmer in Geelong
He said "The pigs don't fit where the family belongs"

They built the Ute - They built the Ute
The cocky* said "Its bonza, beaut"
I can drive it in my Sunday suit Sunday suit
It’s a brute, but its cute
It’s the Ute!

Well they named it the light delivery
And it soon became a necessity
In the town and the country lookin' spick and span
Why it could even tow a caravan
Well its fame was spread near and far
So they sent that Ute to America
Detroit jumped in to lend a hand
And now they even make em over in Japan

They built the Ute - They built the Ute
Down in Texas they root and toot
They love to drive em in their cowboy boots
It’s a brute, but its cute
It’s the Ute!

Call em this and call em that
For a job of work the Ute is where its at
They'll go down almost any road
And take on almost any load

They built the Ute -They built the Ute
The cocky still says "Its bonza, beaut"
For the working man its beyond dispute
Painters, plumbers, any trade
Hard work was why the Ute was made
It’s a brute, but its cute
It’s the Ute!
